Library Card

Manhattan Public Library Card

Library cards are free! A library card establishes an account that allows you to use library services, borrow books, movies, music, magazines, and more.

To get a library card:

  1. Please complete the online form
  2. Visit the library’s Circulation Desk to show staff a photo ID (driver’s license, passport, student I.D.) and pick up your new card
  3. If your current address does not appear on your I.D., please bring a utility bill or other proof of address (recently postmarked mail, checks, rent receipt, etc.)
Children under the age of 18 can get their own cards with a parent’s signature and I.D.
  4. Always bring your card when you come to the library. If you don’t have your library card with you, you may check out materials by supplying other photo identification.

Lost or Stolen Cards

Treat your library card as you would a credit card. If your card is lost or stolen, notify the library immediately so that we can prevent others from misusing your account. Cardholders are responsible for all materials checked out on their accounts. There is a $1 charge for a replacement card.

If you forget your PIN, please visit the Circulation Desk to have it re-set.

You can avoid late fees and extend the loan period for most items, unless someone else has requested the items. The only materials that cannot be renewed are books from the Sizzlers collection. Visit the My Account page to renew your items online.

Hold Items

You may place a hold request on most items. You can choose to be notified via email, text or postal mail when your hold request items are ready to pick up at the Holds Corner. The Holds Corner is located across from the Circulation Desk. Holds are arranged by the first five letters of your last name, then your first and middle initials, and finally, the last two digits of your library barcode number.

Self Check-Out

To avoid waiting in line, use one of the self check-out machines located near the Circulation Desk and the Holds Corner. Scan the barcode on your library card, then scan the library’s barcode on each item you wish to borrow.

Service Area

People who live outside of the library’s service area may apply for a card but will have limited borrowing privileges. The library’s service area includes the following counties: Chase, Clay, Dickinson, Geary, Lyon, Marion, Marshall, Morris, Pottawatomie, Riley, Wabaunsee, and Washington.
