What’s Happening, Manhattan?

Kansas Summer Wheat and StormSummer may not officially be here, but the city of Manhattan and its surrounding areas are ready to go, with numerous events planned for this weekend.

Hosted by the Friends of the Sunset Zoo, Wine in the Wild is an annual fundraiser for the Sunset Zoo.  Visitors will have the chance to explore different exhibits at the zoo, all while enjoying live music and a variety of wines. General admission tickets can be purchased in advance for $45, or for $55 the day of.  Saturday also marks the grand opening of the outdoor gibbons exhibit, which is home to two white-handed gibbons and has been a work in progress since April 2012.

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO THE EXPECTED RAIN

The 13th annual Weenie Dog Races will be taking place downtown this weekend, starting with registration on the patio of AJ’s Pizza.  Events will include the Drag Dogs and Divas Fashion Show, followed by the Mutt Strutt and the actual races to end the morning-long celebration. Proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Purple Power Animal Welfare Society.

While The Wonder Workshop Children’s Museum has great programs and activities going on year-round, this Saturday marks the beginning of the Storytelling in the Garden series. Join storytellers from 10:30 to 11:15 AM every Saturday from June 7th to June 28th to hear stories read in both English and Spanish.

Join us Saturday morning from 11 to 11:30 for a storytime about the sense of sight.  Miss Jessica will read a silly book about blind mice and the children will get to pretend to be bears going over a mountain.  There is no pre-registration required for this storytime and it will be held in the lower atrium.

A collaboration between our young adult librarian and adult services librarians, the Science Saturday series involves exploring the science of everyday life. This Saturday’s session will be held at People’s Grocery, with their staff teaching how to make Mexican food. Cooking will start at 10am and pre-registration is recommended.
