My daughter introduced me to the concept of baby sign language when her first child was born. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about the idea of babies communicating at such a young age. But when I saw her son quickly pick up the basic signs before he could talk, I was sold! His spoken and sign language really took off simultaneously. Baby Sign Language Basics is a great resource for parents wanting to learn signs with their baby. The book includes 300 American Sign Language signs illustrated with clear pictures. A DVD comes with the book, with demonstrations of all the signs. The author answers many questions about baby sign language and provides online resources for expanding on this introduction. I’ve introduced one sign in each session in our Baby Rhyme Time storytime for several years now, and I can really see this idea catching on. Older children will enjoy teaching their new sibling these signs too.
