Nursery rhymes

Saying or singing classic nursery rhymes with your child is a great way to enhance literacy skills. When they are very young, they hear the rhythm and rhyme of the words and love the bonding time with their parent or teacher.  At the preschool stage, they are soaking in even more early literacy skills.  They can supply a rhyming word or repeat whole rhymes by memory.  Incorporating actions with the rhymes is always a fun way to engage children and help them remember what comes next.  School age children may enjoy making up new rhymes or verses to the songs they learned in preschool.  You can find lots of nursery rhyme lyrics in the library or on the web.  Here’s one that includes music samples in case you’ve forgotten the tune:
